Review of R2 Come Home

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: R2 Come Home (2010)
Season 2, Episode 21
7/10
Lame Title, Solid Episode
12 June 2010
C'mon, "R2 Come Home"? Really? Why didn't they just call this "R2 Phone Home"? There's nothing wrong with referencing famous movies and TV shows, but one should not just pick the first lame play on words that comes to mind - previous efforts have been better. That little complaint aside, The Clone Wars seems to be finally finding its feet. We have seen welcome format breakers instead of every episode being about a battle and/or a rescue. (Although this episode *does* center around not one but two rescue missions - yawn.) With the more than welcome return of a familiar face in the previous episode, we also have some *actual* continuity instead of pointless stand-alone episodes. Finally we who are children of the Original Trilogy can watch the "new" Star Wars without feeling embarrassed to admit it.

Since this is a second part of yet another (yet *not* annoying!) two-parter, it's nice to see it conclude the story solidly while laying seeds for future stories. While the series is clearly pandering to the fans of the Original Trilogy by featuring yet another familiar face, it's done in a way that feels right. And let's be honest, the less screen-time Anakin and his annoying padawan have, the better. That Character Who Had a Pointless Cameo Appearance in Episode I features heavily, but fails to impress. Also, didn't we see enough of R2's "comedic" action scenes in Episode II? They are not as funny as the writers and animators think. I wonder when they explain who removed R2's rocket engines, since they are not seen in the Original Trilogy. Actually, I don't. The Prequels and this Clone Wars series (Tartakovsky's was *so* much better) have given us several contradictions nobody at Lucasfilm seems to bother to address.

Anyway, this is still a solid episode, even if it does not achieve greatness. But it shows that this series actually may have a future worth waiting for. My vote is 7/10.
