Rathbone in a Romantic Role
24 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Most of us don't picture Basil Rathbone as a suave, dashing, romantic figure with hardly a trace of menace in his characterization, but that's the sort of role he handles so delightfully in this somewhat misnamed movie. The main problem with the film is that the Constance Bennett character is obviously supposed to be an ugly duckling. She isn't. She's beautiful in both before and after modes. It's also not explained why she's in love with her boss. To my mind, he has precious little to recommend him – except money, of course. Aside from these lapses, however, the pic is brightly directed by Paul L. Stein, who makes the most of Pathé's unusually luxurious budget. And it's nice to see Rita La Roy in a decent role as the vicious Grace.
