Living Hell (2008 TV Movie)

Oh my god! A killer root!
6 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
A small Texan town is being overrun by a army experiment gone bad. Despite the military's best effort CGI animated roots are taking over the television screen at alarming rates covering everything in a diabolical fashion. Fortunately an AWOL army technician Carrie Freeborn (Erica Leershern) pucks up her sensual lips and joins forces with Frank Sears (Johnathon Schaech) to repel the bad special effects before they take over Hollywood.

A typical sci-fi channel movie, so naturally not a lot is to be expected, save for a mindless time-filler. However in the midst of appalling acting, terrible CGI and lacking suspension you can actually find some strong suites behind this one. The script isn't bad, albeit some of the plot points don't really make sense (why did Frank Sears's mom kill herself and her husband?) and some scenes seem forcibly outside of the logic of the movie (the whole end sequence, where the killer roots seemed to act differently than during the rest of the debacle). Nonetheless Schaech is a really decent and likable actor, who effortlessly sells the worst dialogue. On top of that we have several scenes, which worked really well. One concerns our hero smearing Carrie's body with blood. The other comes when Frank understands that his efforts to stop doomsday actually caused it from happening. Not entirely satisfied with the acting and resolution of that scene, but I really would love such an idea to be carried on in another much better movie.
