Review of The Redwoods

The Redwoods (1967)
7/10
Strong on cinematography, Weak on narrative.

Warning: Spoilers
This short film won an Oscar for Best Documentary Short. It was the spark plug for a movement to establish the Redwood National Park, established the year after the film was produced. (1967 is considered by some as the time when out current national preservation movement for historic buildings began, so the film is in keeping with the times in that sense.) The film itself has excellent cinematography. Unfortunately, the film on the DVD is faded and in need of restoration. The narrative is sparse and plodding. However, the reason for the film is given at the end. It points out that it will take 1000 years to replace the mature redwoods if all are cut down.

I am glad that The Redwoods is finally out on DVD. It has taken too long to issue this.
