Love in Unexpected Places
9 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Jean Harlow, Mae Clarke, and Marie Prevost are the Three Wise Girls in question. The plot revolves around them trying to find love in the right places. The film opens with Jean as a soda jerk in a drugstore, but not for long. When her boss comes on to her, she slaps him and quits. When he refuses to pay her her two days' pay she has coming to her, a drunk at the counter gets confrontational and makes him pay. The drunk offers her a ride and she hesitantly takes it. So begins a strange and very natural relationship between the drunk, who so happens to be rich, and Jean Harlow. Her roommate, Dot, played by Marie Provost, types envelopes for a living and makes wisecracks for our amusement. (Ironically, in real life, the actress Marie Prevost would later die in the same year as Jean Harlow.) Meanwhile Mae Clarke has found love in another woman's husband. And all their lives (or their romantic entanglements) intertwine in one way or another by the end. And, Andy Devine has a small part as the drunk millionaire's chauffeur. This is a very good film that really engulfs the viewer into the characters' problems and world, but so much so, it feels somewhat down-trodden, depressing, or hopeless at times, until the last reel, of course. But the end doesn't mean happiness for all concerned. Watch "Three Wise Girls" to find love in all the unexpected places.
