Review of The Glades

The Glades (2010–2013)
7/10
First season is great, after-wards...

Warning: some spoilers about second season.

To orient the reader, I don't watch many shows in the procedural crime genre, candidates need to 1. Have a strong element of humor 2. Not get too grotesque in the crimes involved (so yes to Castle and no to CSI).

The Glades fits the bill and I quite enjoyed the first season. Matt Passmore does a great job combining uber confidence, chutzpah and charm that defines the lead character. There are strong and competent female characters, Kiele Sanchez is appealing as the can-do-everything and conflicted single mom. The dilemmas the two face in pursuing a romance is the main arc plot and creates a lot of sympathy for the main characters.

I'm somewhere near the end of season two and may come back to it, but have stopped watching for now. A big part of why season two is less interesting is the how the writers handle the perennial challenge handling an romantic tension arc plot when it's not clear how long the show will last. A common strategy, pursued in the second season, is to extend the tension with roadblocks such as one or both of the pair pursuing other relationships. I don't know of an example of when this worked well, here as elsewhere it ends up seeming arbitrary. In The Glades, there isn't an arc or broader development beyond the "will they get together?" line.

While I haven't been faced with the writer's dilemma, I think that developing new arc lines is a better strategy. After spending too long on the delay tactic, the writers for Chuck did a great job of reorienting the show around new arcs. Long-term character development for the whole team would be a great strategy. Hopefully the show will go (perhaps has gone?) this direction.
