In the second season premiere of "Vera", the title character and her team investigate an arson attack on the house of a police sergeant, who also happens to be a close old friend of Vera's. At the time of the attack he was not inside the house, but his teenage daughter was, and she gets badly hurt. Fearing that she will never wake up from her coma, her father commits suicide right in front of Vera's eyes, so now the stakes are personal for her. In fact, there is so much personal stuff in this episode - Vera's somewhat vague relationship with the dead cop, Holly's transfer request, Vera's dinner with Joe and his wife, etc. - that the mystery itself almost takes a back seat. And although you probably won't guess who-done-it, the finale, and this episode in general, is somewhat short on thrills. **1/2 out of 4.
