Locale Major Asset in Okay Film
9 October 2013
Robert Wagner and Terry Moore star in this Romeo-and-Juliet type story about Greeks who go diving for sponges off the coast of Florida. When Bob and dad Gilbert Roland and Grandpa J. Carroll Naish are out in a section where they are (supposedly) not supposed to be, they are robbed of their catch by Peter Graves. This only adds fuel to a fire that had already been there between the Greeks and the locals, namely Richard Boone who is Terry Moore's father. Get the picture. But Peter Graves has always liked her. In fact, it's been assumed by the locals that he made his claim on her long ago. But, when she starts to like Bob, things change. When an unexpected accident happened in diving for another catch, the Greek family's plight only gets worse. Despite its beautiful locale and its somewhat interesting yet predictable plots, it doesn't seem to be very impressive, looking back on it. While character actor Naish is a good actor, his accent as a Greek was kind of annoying. I've had that critique of him in a movie before now. And, while Bob is likable, I don't think he can carry the burden and the viewer's interest of this movie on his shoulders alone. 5 out of 10 stars, for a beautiful film with not much else to recommend it.
