The performances are amazing, the story less so...

Warning: Spoilers
The story about Julian Assange and the controversy he created with leaking Afghan War Logs through his whistleblower website called WikiLeaks is captivating and intensely interesting…so, why didn't I get that from the movie adaptation?

This movie was just a breeding ground of potential and it had so much working in its favor. The visuals look terrific and perfect music seems to accompany each and every scene. Furthermore, the editing is slick and fast pace and seems to fit perfectly with the themes of the hacking/computer age. Finally, the acting is just top shelf stuff in this movie. Everyone, from the supporting players to the main cast are just impossibly good and giving their all(and more) with their roles. Daniel Brühl and Benedict Cumberbatch are insanely amazing that words pretty much fail me to accurately describe how good their performances were—especially Cumberbatch; he perfectly imitated Julian Assange so well that I suspected charges of sexual assault were going to be filed against him due to a case of mistaken identity.

The only real problem the movie had, and it's what made the film just an average, one-time viewing type of movie, was the story. The movie had all the potential for something amazing in the suspense department and it's clear the film wants to be a techno thriller with hints of espionage thrown in for good measure but the script feels like it never wants to actually get up and utilize the potential. There's not much drama, tension, thrills or suspense to speak of and the film just feels like it's going through the motions when it is concerned with its story and not doing much else.

While watchable, "The Fifth Estate" lacked the magic it needed to be a real defining movie. It's actually shocking considering the controversy behind WikiLeaks is already interesting enough by itself. The translation just felt like it lost that spark that made it interesting.

Hi! My name is Rev. Ron and I love movies! So much that I write a blog where I review whatever film I am currently watching (Old or new!). You can read a more in-depth review of this film (and others) at revronmovies.blogspot.com.
