Castle (2009–2016)

Not Your Typical Crime Drama
13 March 2014
You'll start watching this series and you'll probably want to give up if you're anything like me. The typical American crime drama is one of the most repetitious, boring genres on TV. You won't find me watching one. I watched this for two simple reasons: 1.) My crush loves it. 2.) Nathan Fillion. At first I disliked it, but after forcing myself to watch many episodes, I gradually began to love it. Almost everything about it. I'm not sure if it wore off on me or if it simply got better, but I love it.

Season one was quite the chore. My only real reason for watching it was for the main protagonist, Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), and partially for his relationship with Kate Beckett (Stana Katic). I was constantly growing bored. Even the characters, something I love about every series chucked at me, bored me too much to explain.

Season two was where I began to like it. I realised that Kate Beckett, otherwise known as Beckett, was a great character without her relationship with Richard Castle, otherwise known as Castle. I also came to realise that Castle's family scenes with his daughter, Alexis Castle (Molly C. Quinn), and his mother, Martha Rodgers (Susan Sullivan), were huge highlights of the show and I began to grow excited for them. So, by this time I was not in love with one, but four characters.

Season three was when I realised just how wrong I was on the character front and came to love the show. I ignored Javier Esposito (Jon Huertas) and Kevin Ryan (Seamus Dever) before, but in this season I saw that they are essential to the show and are wonderful characters; in fact, Kevin Ryan is probably my second favourite character behind Castle now.

It isn't just the characters who are great, some of the stories are brilliantly done, one of which left my jaw agape in surprise. Most of the stories, I admit, are the boring old crime drama plot lines, but the characters are so brilliant that I just don't care. These characters, they're a few of the best on TV. Hell, if these guys were in a soap opera, I'd watch it, which is saying an awful lot for me.

Just watch this show, even if you find it boring, because I'm almost entirely sure that you'll love it.
