The Guest (I) (2014)
Awesome, badass movie!

This movie kicks ass, and that's the best way to describe it in few words. Definitely one of the best movies i seen in last few years.

Great soundtrack, i specially liked song Anthonio by Annie which made already good scene from the movie into great scene. Score is also great, very John Carpenter-like and it sure does sounds like some scores from his 1980's movies. Acting by everyone is good and there is no bad actor in the movie. Dan Stevens as David is just amazing and very creepy in his role as mysterious guest. Direction is good and it has certain style, just like cinematography. While it's not action packed movie, it has some really good action bits which are well filmed and without any shaky-cam BS. There are also some nice tense moments, not just in action scenes but throughout the movie, which specially works in slasher-horror-like finale. As for violence in the movie, there are no scenes with whole bunch of gore but this is still violent and R rated thriller with actual blood squibs and other gory effects, and not some CG blood.

I can definitely see lot of nods to 1980's movies, just look at Halloween masks in final scene, they are the same ones used in Halloween 3, then there is also a gun used by characters in final scene, it's the same gun that Donald Pleasence has in Halloween 4. And just like some other people have said, entire story is kinda like combination of First Blood (soldier returns from war and he has changed mentally), Terminator (unstoppable cyborg-like killer) and Halloween (psycho killer on the loose and his doctor, in this case Major Carver, chases after him and tries to stop him). I sure would love to see this turned into new Halloween series, with David being like Michael Myers and Major Carver as Dr. Loomis. But on its own, movie is still great and i wouldn't mind if they don't do any sequels. Maybe some people have problems with ending but i think it was quite a surprise and another nice homage to old slasher movies. If you seen the movie and you are a fan of slashers, then you know what i mean.

And one of the best things about the movie, it's 90-some minutes long, it doesn't have bunch of unnecessary subplots and all the other BS, and it has some nice dark humour, my favorite "funny" bit is in certain scene where song "Because I Love You" plays.

In the end, i love this movie 100%, it's my favorite of 2014, i would love to see more of these type of movies in the future. Despite its limited release and success, critics and audience gave the movie lot of praise and i sure as hell agree with them.
