Oliver Twist (I) (1922)

Very Well Done Silent Version

Jackie Coogan was so photogenic. I think his physical appearance and size work better than any of the more sophisticated, modern versions of Oliver Twist. This is quite faithful to the book. One of the characters that is cast off in most of them is that of Noah Claypool who takes on great significance in the book. He is a sad and sadistic character who has no moral sense. The character of Sikes is well done. He is usually portrayed as a younger, threatening figure. Here he is scruffy and middle aged and his appearance is quite bulky. Still, we see him as an utter psychopathic. Fagin is portrayed by Lon Chaney, the great horror figure of the silents. He is wiry and sniveling, but presents great photogenic presence. The one thing that is missing is a real picture of the Bumbles, who sort of disappear after a while. They usually get their comeuppance at some point. Mostly, however, Ireally liked the little guy. The Artful Dodger is probably truer to the original intention of the great writer and one would hope he would get more screen time and dialogue (well, as much as a silent figure can). Very well done and set the stage for future presentations.
