Sherlock Holmes with a twist
8 May 2015
Henry Morgan (Ioan Gruffudd) is an immortal. He was shot 200 years ago as he tried to free the slaves on a ship. Since then, he gets reborn every time he dies. He is now the medical examiner in Manhattan working with underling Lucas Wahl (Joel David Moore) and detective Jo Martinez (Alana De La Garza). He owns an antique store with his son Abe (Judd Hirsch) who knows his secret. Then he's contacted by a mysterious man who may just have the same condition.

It has a good premise although the first few shows gave me a false sense that he would die and get reborn all the time. That would be too morbid and a bit gimmicky. I'm glad they drop his off-putting obsession with dying and constantly killing him off. It's more dramatic for him to fight against death for fear of revealing himself which the show settles on. This works both as a police procedural and a serial where he tries to hide his secret. Ioan Gruffudd is very likable as the lead. Joel David Moore adds a fun tone. Alana De La Garza does her Law & Order character. Judd Hirsch is great as always. It's a great Sherlock Holmes show with a twist.
