Overdrive

Another vehicle (pardon the pun) to further Scott Eastwood's slow to ignite career. The problem is it's movies like this that will slow his journey on the road to stardom. Eastwood is by no means the worst thing about this only just watchable action thriller. Think more Gone in sixty seconds rather than Fast and Furious.

Overdrive tells the story of two brothers played by Freddie Thorp and Scott Eastwood. The two get into hot water when they steal a classic Bugatti. I'll say no more of the story, only that the plot is more clunky than an old gearbox. This movie makes no real sense and it soon runs out of gas. With a short runtime of only 1hr 33 mins I am disappointed that Director Antonio Negret could not piece together a movie I could fully invest my interest in. I consider myself to be a petrolhead so the array of classic cars did stir some passion within my soul. Sadly though due to some amateurish acting, terrible dialogue and just plain silliness this film breaks down. More time is spent on product placement rather than good story telling. I did like the odd touch. The appearance of a Tag Heuer Monaco watch on Eastwood's wrist is a nice nod to Steve McQueen but they didn't need to keep showing it. The film also ran like a really long advertisement for BMW. The destruction of an M4 at the beginning did bring a tear to my eye. Shame then that the actual on screen drama could not raise any of my emotions.

Overdrive isn't a bad looking film. Viewed in HD it is a colourful movie. A particular marketplace scene allows colours to pop. There's some wonderful sweeping landscape shots too and all the cars look stunning in Hi-def. Sound is a let down though. Dialogue gets lost and overpowered by surround sound effects making it hard to properly hear what's been said. Not a real problem though as the script is B movie material at its most mediocre.

Overdrive is a movie trying to capitalise on the success of movies like The Fast and Furious but apart from the Carnography and the beautiful Ana de Armas as Stephanie, it ends up being a forgettable experience.
