What's a Soul Worth?
2 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In "Double or Nothing", a casino mob boss comes to collect on Gunn's soul, something he sold long ago for a special someone. Realizing this is the end of the road, Gunn pushes away Fred and accepts his fate. Meanwhile, Angel continues to cope with the loss of his son. Cordy's back in town and is there for him in his time of need. Wesley continues to recover in the hospital and realizes he's all alone in this world. Angel and the gang must intervene on Gunn's behalf with the mob boss. With the help of other casino patrons, they take him down and free Gunn from his contract. It turns out that Gunn traded his soul for his truck when he was 17. Well alright then...

After a string of solid episodes, this was a bit of a throwaway for me. The whole mystery surrounding who Gunn sold his soul for was intriguing while it lasted. But when it was revealed to be a motor vehicle, I couldn't help but roll my eyes. Better to leave it a mystery than a dumb gag like that.

Gunn and Fred's romance is still an oddity to me. I'm not sure how I feel about it. They seem to lack a spark or a high degree of chemistry. Maybe this will develop over time but for now it feels forced.

I'm glad Cordy's back though. That seemed to be the only meaningful thing to occur this episode. She's a grounding presence in this show. That's something I didn't really realize until her disappearance; glad we're back to pseudo-normal. We'll see where the gang goes from here without Wes. Remember when Angel considered him the boss of the organization? I don't think he retains that title any longer.
