So-so film about a Gulf Coast fishing grounds feud
29 December 2018
"Beneath the 12-Mile Reef" is a sea adventure film set in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida. The plot is a good one - a sort of Hatfield and McCoy feud in the Gulf Coast fishing grounds. Here, one family harvests sponges and the other goes after conchs. Unfortunately, the screenplay is weak and the film is choppy. The film seems like a collage of independent scenes shot and then tossed together.

This is an early look at Robert Wagner. The cast has some prominent names of the silver screen - Gilbert Roland., Richard Boone, Peter Graves, J. Carrol Naish and Jay Novello. But, most of the story lacks energy and none of the roles stand out.

Too many qualities are lacking to give this film much of a nod. Even the underwater shooting is minimal, but that is the best part of the movie. Those who like coastal areas may find this film okay on an otherwise dull day. But it's not something most folks would want to rush out to buy.
