Another review made an extremely important point--this film is a Japanese film made for a primarily Japanese audience. So, in this humble reviewer's opinion, if you didn't find this movie "brilliant" or "an artistic masterpiece" or any other pretentious artsy phrase you'd like, that's not entirely unexpected or bad or whatever. Just enjoy the ultra-violence and over-the-top obscenities (because they are most certainly over-the-top).
This movie is worth watching for the first 8 minutes alone. It's extremely stimulating visually--not necessarily pleasing in all respects, but definitely stimulating.
Like a lot of Asian cinema, DoA is unapologetically overblown. One of the things that made this film a lot of fun for me was the employment of practical effects (even the foul ones) instead of CGI stuff. Depending on whether you watch the R-Rated or uncut version, you may get more practical effects than you ever bargained for.
