In "Awakening", after the events of last episode, Wes grabs a shaman to extract Angel's soul and bring out Angelus so the gang can learn more about the Beast and his relationship to it. But the shaman tried to kill Angel. They defeat him but it leads them on a journey to find a sword that can kill the Beast. They locate it; Angel and Connor use it against the big bad, stabbing it in the head and killing it. Angel and Cordy make love, causing him a moment of perfect happiness, breaking the curse.
But wait! It was the appearance of perfect happiness. The shaman from the beginning did all of this to Angel in a dream-like state. None of it actually happened. It tricks Angelus into coming out. He laughs manically as the episode ends.
I peeked at the episode rating with about 10 minutes to go and was absolutely shocked at the rating. I was worried the Angel fanbase had gone crazy for a second, voting so highly a mediocre episode. It wasn't until the twist ending that it all fell into place for me. What a great twist! I feel like I should have seen it coming but it completely blindsided me.
Anyways, I'm excited to see what's next. I enjoy when Boreanaz gets to portray his darker side. I was a bit out on this whole Angel not knowing what Angelus did in the past thing but this episode won me over to the plot device a bit.
