far from studios
19 January 2019
A movie directed by russian Dimitri Kirsanoff in 1934 in the swiss mountains far from the artificial studios, that was for me. And from the beginning, I was smashed on the screen by a story and pictures never seen before. Yes, I had never seen such a strong drama shot with elaborated pictures in the authentic settings of a swiss mountain, as strong as a Luis Bunuel movie at his best. Shot by Bunuel, Rapt would have become a masterpiece classic. But it was directed by Dimitri Kirsanoff, at that time experimental director (see the strange Ménilmontant) who would later direct commercial and uninventive movies. So Rapt never became a classic but it should. Everything is exceptional : cinematography in natural settings, editing, and all the cast, very special mention to erotic Dita Parlo (who was close friend with another russian director Leonide Moguy, who directed one single masterpiece "Je t'attendrai"). Unique.
