Review of Barbary Coast

Barbary Coast (1935)
7/10
Another excellent and underrated film by Howard Hawks.

This is an excellent movie, possibly not a masterpiece, but absolutely recommended. Entertaining, without a dull moment, and marvelously played by an Edward G. Robinson at his best, Walter Brennan playing good-hearted crook 'old atrocity' with an eye patch in one of those memorable roles he always played for Hawks, and a wonderful Miriam Hopkins. Also interesting is the recreation of a fog-shrouded San Francisco when it was a small city with unpaved streets, dominated by the gold rush and the law of the strongest. Life revolves around a roulette where the naive gold-diggers who have achieved some fortune are attracted by the beauty of the croupier, Swam (Hopkins), and the hope to multiply their profits. The owner, Robinson, is the owner of everything, or so he thinks.
