Fresh take on a classic
19 August 2019
I grew up watching both the 2003 series, the 2012 series, and the movies in between. I love the whole tmnt universe and despite the change that the rise writers took, I adore this incarnation as much-if not more- than the past ones. The boys get the chance to have a childhood not being raised in the strict regime of ninjutsu, they are more fleshed out in that they all aren't forced into a specific role in the family.

Raphael is not just the "hot head" he's now the over protective, caring, animal loving, and brash 15 year old snapping turtle and self appointed leader. He openly is very protective of his little brothers and his new weapons powers get properly activated by his love for them.

Donatello isnt simply the "brains" (though he is still vastly intelligent) he is an impulsive, stubborn, dramatic, sarcastic and determined 14 year old soft shell who is trying to compensate his shell with over the top inventions.

Leonardo no longer is the "fearless leader"- though he is still fearless- he is finally given the chance to be fleshed out and developed as a character. He gets to be a stubborn, impulsive, witty, sassy, kinda egotistical, 14 year old red eared slider who despite now being the third eldest, still loves his brothers. Despite this, he still has come up with several plans in the midst of a fight.

Michelangelo finally has been freed from his prison of being the "comic relief" "wild one" or "stereotypical adhd" (which was harmful in my opinion as someone WITH adhd). He's still the baby of the family, but he's been fleshed out to be a talented chef, acrobat and painter. He also is stubborn, excitable, sometimes a bit too blunt, a 'softy', but also has a temper that's a force to be reckoned with. He acts like a normal 13 year old boy- despite being a box turtle living in the sewers- following his big brothers faithfully, but also wanting to be independent.

The creators take on splinter has caused some controversy but after seeing his backstory you understand why he is the way he is. Before anyone says something how "Kevin Eastman wouldn't like this" just know that Eastman actually LOVES this take. Change is inevitable, and this change is something that needs time to adjust to, but its time this series got a new fresh take.
