calibrations

Martha (Diane Keaton) is alone in the world and dying of cancer. The love of her life is her late cheerleader mother. She moves into a retirement community in Georgia to die. Her neighbor Sheryl (Jacki Weaver) is annoyingly nosy. Community Vicki (Celia Weston) is annoyingly dictatorial. One day, Martha decides to start a cheerleading group.

This is perfectly nice. It's very standard. It has a few odd laughs. I like the cast. It's fine. It's perfectly fine. There are some calibration problems. First problem is Martha. Why is she moving to that community? It needs to set up the southern belles. It needs to set up her loneliness. She can be sad but she can't be bitter. She can't be giving people side eyes. If she's pissed, it's incompatible with her starting up the cheer squad. There's no reason for that guy to call Chloe that. It turns a reasonable villain into a cartoon villain. It's too bad since the mother son situation starts out very relatable. I'd rather he call them a cult. That would be funnier. Vicki is almost the same but Martha does probably anger her when they first meet. I want Chloe and Ben to do something more. Rhea Perlman should zero in more on her husbandcide. It's a funny bit and she should be mindlessly commenting on it. Mostly, this is a perfectly nice comedy with a few calibration issues and somewhat cliché.
