The Christmas Carol (1949 TV Movie)
5/10
Surprisingly effective abbreviated TV version of Dickens' classic.

Warning: Spoilers
The performance of Taylor Holmes as Ebeneezer Scrooge isn't bad, but he's certainly not as menacing as others who have played the part, seeming more like the unseen Fezzywink (Scrooge's boss in the past) or either of the two men seeking charity donations in the pre-nightmare sequence. Still, the anthology short manages to capture the important details even though there's not much in the way of set or character detail. Earl Lee, as Jacob Marley, does get a decent entrance, a nice bit of a special effect for early TV. Holmes gets his best moment laughing like a goat in the post dream sequence, indeed as the narration indicates, quite effective. Vincent Price narrates with his usual dignity, and in a sense, I wish he had played the part. If you've seen the classic 1950's British version or the musical version or George C. Scott's version for TV, you can skip this without guilt.
