A good spoof of erotic thrillers
13 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It has better actors in main roles than most spoofs. Even Airplane! had just a few great actors in prominent roles (though it had several in supporting roles). Also, it's different than most. It does spoof specific movies, but a _lot_ of them and none predominantly, yet it keeps its own (derivative, of course) story, which is about as coherent as such things can be. So, it is _not_ a spoof on "Basic Instinct" or "Fatal attraction" at large. Only in a few spots, but just about as much as a dozen other movies. Spoofs are mostly on particular scenes and situations, while the general story is not a spoof, other than it is as ridiculous as the stories of erotic thrillers of the 80s (and early 90s).

It starts great, first half an hour is full of laughs. Later it slows down, has more misses but it's still OK. Had it followed through to the end after that first half hour, it would have been great, like Airplane! or Naked Gun(s).

The problem it had with many critics, I guess, is that it was really dismissive of the genre. See, Naked Gun is a spoof, but, very much a _loving_ spoof of the police detective shows/movies ("I like this... let's have fun with it"). Airplane! is a more dismissive of the catastrophe genre of the 70s, but, a lot of comedy there is not explicitly about the genre, the spoof there is mostly a framing device ("it's a spoof, so let's put Kareem Abdul Jabbar in there"). This is not. It exposes erotic thrillers of the 80s for what they were - full of implausible stories, unrealistic situations and way-too-hot women, which took themselves too seriously ("I think this is idiotic... Let's make fun of it"). But, these movies were very popular, like the (Marvel) comic book movies are now. If somebody were to create such a dismissive spoof on comic book movies today, it would be paned by critics, also. But, say, Deadpool is praised.

Yes, quite a few jokes don't really work, some spoofs are not great. For example, Cape Fear is spoofed quite a lot, yet it mostly doesn't work (and is too repetitive), while Body Heat is spoofed essentially once and it worked _great_. Maybe that's because Cape Fear is actually a regular thriller, not an erotic one - it is as silly as erotic thrillers of its day and I guess that's why it was included, but, still, it was probably a bad choice as it proved too hard to fit.

Bottom line - this is a good spoof movie, well worth a watch.
