Warning: Spoilers
You'll feel sorry for the heavily bandaged Leni Tana in this interesting mix of post-war intrigued and subtle horror set on a mysterious tropical island where Nazi officer Rudolph Anders resides doing experiments on women to try to restore wife Tana's face. Unfortunately for the self centered Irish McCalla, she's Anders' last hope in getting the right ingredients for his devoted but horribly scarred wife. Other monstrous looking women saunter around the island hoping for death, and this gives them the illusion of being demonic even though the soft spoken but insane Anders is really the one with the demonic soul. McCalla is cruising the seas with handsome Tod Griffin and gregarious Victor Sen Yung who can barely put up with her demanding ways. But they are faced with a crisis that will quickly change her and of course bring around romance between McCalla and Griffin.

Enjoyable but often idiotic, this adventure yarn is only horrific in the sense of how the females look as a result of Anders' experiments. McCalla isn't exactly the brightest bulb either, standing still as she stares at a giant snake in a tree which she could have easily gotten away from. The dialogue is silly and the plot preposterous, but there is something touching about Tana's predicament and the love for her crazy husband. The film ends with a truly graphic volcano explosion followed by the island breaking up and preparing to sync. However, the editing makes it look really phony, and you expect to see big tumbling rocks bouncing like rubber balls before it is all over. In spite of that, it is enjoyable, a typical Saturday matinee adventure, and ultimately, pretty unforgettable.
