Sawdust and Tinsel review
30 April 2020
Early Bergman movie sees the gloomy clouds that would become a staple of his later output starting to gather. Ake Gronberg's ageing circus master and Harriet Andersson's pretty young horse rider are unlikely lovers fated to see their relationship disintegrate in plain view of friends and strangers alike. The seedy, run-down circus is a depressing arena, a perverted reflection of society, and its citizens a cold and damaged bunch. One of those movies you don't really enjoy but can't stop watching...
