Leave it to the Disney Channel to tap into the enduring appeal of singing-and-dancing young people to create this enormously popular musical, which has spun off High School Musical 2, High School Musical 3: Senior Year, and a performance DVD called High School Musical: The Concert. The enormously wholesome and morally uplifting movies are a great antidote to the cynicism and anger that pervade so many contemporary films. On the other hand, the narcissism of these young folks puts Fame to shame, and after a while the concert begins to sound like a karaoke tape.
