I have a feeling this game could become a rediscovered cult classic. Firstly it is difficult gameplay but not on a GTA level or Super mario but I found it enough of a challenge lets say. There are quite a few puzzles, usually which require common sense but then there is a tendency to panic and look on a utube walkthrough to get through these. The other types of mission are tear ups with enemy, or skill missions, which I really enjoyed actually especially the jump function for Duke nukem.
A lot of criticism of the game is the loading time which I agree is frustrating but it is a big game design wise and ambition of the 12 year project. Im playing on PS3, 23 levels and I thought the graphics were cool, and still had that Comic book kinda style, which made the game famous, the puzzle with the duke statue is iconic at the start. The other criticism is what happens to the babes in the alien hive, I agree the humour described by one journalist of toxic geek masculinity hit the nail on the head. This part of the game was a little too sick, its just there for shock value , and might take on a cult meaning in 10 years. I also found in the strip bar a flyer that says bring tampons to beer party as misogynistic and uncalled for. But I guess the original 3D game didnt pull any punches, so its like ronseal it does what it says on the paint tin!!
Both mini and full size monster truck missions are really fun, doing the stunts, and the strip bar is cool with the air hockey nice touch. For me the best level is the hamburger joint, where duke is is shrunk, and has to negotiate a kitchen full of hazards and an electrified water on the floor to save an employee! The enemy look like toy soldiers.
Most of the bosses aswell probably the highest accolade i can give it . A throwback to big tear ups on the end of levels with a badass boss cant beat it. The game does drag for the last 3 levels, but not bad for a 23 level game! All in all very fun , I regressed to being 15 again at the immaturity of the humor, while having a beer. Its no picasso to the gaming industry , but a great game with a beer!!
