Doc Hollywood (1991)
7/10
Light, gentle, and sweet

Oh, I know there are all sorts of problems with this film, the silly story, the cheesiness, the predictability, etc.... I don't care, I like it anyway. The repeated compliments of "Nice pig, Doc" and "Fiiiine pig, Doc" as Michael J. Fox walks around with a pig he's received in payment for services rendered make me smile. Seeing the romance bloom between his character and Julie Warner's after some initial creepiness does too. There are some stereotypical country folk here but on the other hand, we find tolerance to gays, no sign of racism, a country doctor who quotes Walt Whitman, a vegetarian who graduated from a college in New York, an outdoor showing of Buster Keaton's 'The General,' and in general a lot of smarts to go along with the close knit community vibes. This film is light, gentle, and sweet, just what you need sometimes.
