Angels (1976)
8/10
A genuinely strange movie

Warning: Spoilers
God (smoothly played by David Bryant) sends two recently deceased mobsters back to Earth to assist deranged cowboy wannabe Tex (a lively portrayal by Vincent Schiavelli) in bumping off controversial video artist Leon DeWilde (likeable Drew Abrams).

Director/co-writer Spencer Compton relates the engrossingly offbeat story at a steady pace, brings an engagingly idiosyncratic sensibility to the quirky premise, makes nice use of various New York City locations, and further spices things up with an amusing sense of oddball humor. Moreover, this kooky flick boasts a few inspired off-the-wall moments which include two bumbling hot angels on roller skates attacking Leon in a park and a Wild West-style showdown between Leon and Tex on empty city streets. Gus Thomas and Dan McCarthy are hilarious as the inept would-be assassins, Marquita Callwood brings plenty of winning sass to her role as hip reporter Lulu, and Keith Berger contributes an expressive turn as Leon's mute assistant Ray. Rob Hahn's bright cinematography provides an attractive sunny look. Olubiji Adetoye's funky score hits the get-down groovy spot. A real curio.
