Enjoyable overall, overwrought ending

Warning: Spoilers
A character study, with Alec Guiness the overbearing, vugar and conceited acting colonel clashing with his replacement, the emotionally enervated John Mills. Each plays his part well, though the characters themselves seem a bit over-baked. The entire dynamic is reminiscent of the Caine Mutiny, particularly in the climax and denouement, with the second-in-command major playing something like the Fred MacMurray character's part. My real issue with the tale is the abrupt breakdown of Guiness' to-then fairly unsavory character; to my mind he would be more likely to steamroll through the tragedy without much thought, let alone suffer a nervous breakdown. I do see how the film could be viewed as a bit out of time in both the genre and the mood/trend of 1960 British cinema. Nevertheless an enjoyable 1:45 minutes.
