Mobile Fighter G Gundam (1994–1995)
9/10
A Weird yet Intriguing Mecha-Anime Series that I really recommend Anime Fans should watch!

Warning: Spoilers
After the strange campiness of ZZ Gundam, I was hoping for something more on the level of Gundam Wing.

Fortunately, my hopes weren't just satisfied with Mobile Fighter G-Gundam, but exceeded.

The story moves along at a nice brisk pace, not focusing entirely on the action sequences, but finding a nice rough balance between the action and character development. There are some cheesy moments, at least one or two per episode, that look like they would be more suited to the Dragon Ball anime universe. However, the cheesy moments don't rule the show. Also, there is at least or almost one major plot twist per episode, especially in the latter part of the show, which kind of gives the show a Game of Thrones-like vibe. The action sequences are impressive and the animation are well done. Also, I love the mecha design in this anime. Though, I think modeling the design of a Gundam after Sailor Moon is really strange.

Pros:
  • Great Character Development
  • Cool Mecha Design
  • Impressive Storyline
  • Great Villains
  • The technology behind piloting the Gundams is amazing. Essentially, the cockpit scans the pilot and the pilot uses his/her body to puppeteer the Gundam, sort of like Pacific Rim.

Cons:
  • Ending is a bit Abrupt and Open-Ended, much like the earlier Gundam series. However, it is quite a bit more optimistic than Zeta Gundam.
  • Sailor Moon Gundam just doesn't look right. At all.
  • Domon shouting his battle speech in every...single...episode right before he lands a coup-de-grace attack is so utterly repetitive and annoying. Seriously, How many times must I hear how his hand is burning red and seeks to claim victory?
  • Several storylines and plot devices are left open by the end, which could have been explored more. Hopefully, if there is a sequel series, we might see some resolutions.
  • Some scenes feel like they have been ripped and redone from Dragon Ball Z, mainly involving the fight scenes. I'm pretty sure I've seen a Kame-Hame-Ha be used in one episode.

Final Opinion: I highly recommend this series. It's fun, enjoyable, yet also dramatic and dark at parts. Really good show!

May the Force be with you!
