Review of 1917

1917 (2019)
6/10
Visually stunning but emotionally void
23 December 2020
There's no debating that '1917' is a groundbreaking piece of cinema. With the entire film consisting of only one continuous, uncut scene, it makes for impressive viewing. It will no doubt be remembered for its innovation and breathtaking cinematography.

But while '1917' excels in the visuals department, I was left disappointed overall. The problem with creating such a visual feast is that people end up more interested in how the film looks than the storyline and characters. It felt like the plot was complementing the visuals a lot of the time rather than the other way round, and it is severely lacking in emotional depth and character development.

Overall, while the film looks fantastic and is well acted and produced, the storyline failed to grip me and the characters are difficult to connect with.
