There seems to be a love or hate attitude to this film and I'm in the former camp and enjoyed it. The plot may not be that original but is has a streak of ghoulish humour that is entertaining, right down to the last ironic moment that makes way for a sequel that never happened.
Ralph Bates was ideal as the driven Frankenstein, who is amoral and supercilious and unlike Peter Cushing's interpretation (though that one of course is great) is a bit of a joker as well as having an unrestrained libido. He is much more interesting than the monster itself whose appearance two-thirds of the way in takes the story into a regular killer on the loose narrative.
Equally good is seedy Dennis Price as the business-like supplier of body parts and bountiful Kate O'Mara as the housekeeper Alys who supplies...other things. Malcolm Williamson contributes a near perfect music score. Shame there wasn't a sequel.
