If season five of "Dexter" was a little grimmer than I was comfortable with then season six is, despite its customary amounts of massive violence and murder, a bit of a palette cleanser.
Alone again, with just Harrison (Evan & Luke Kruntchev) in his life, Dexter (Michael C Hall) becomes embroiled in the case of the Doomsday Killers, a pair of Christian zealots who create a series of biblical tableaux's leading up to an eclipse that they predict will signify the end of the world. Professor Gellar (Edward James Olmos) is a scholar committed to the cause whilst, Travis Marshall (Colin Hanks) is his apprentice whose devotion is not quite as complete. Whilst investigating the case, Dexter questions his own relationship with religion and makes friends with reformed criminal turned Pastor, Brother Sam (Yaslin "Mos Def" Bey).
It's hard not to start with some appreciation for the fact that this season pulls one of the classic Hollywood twists, which I never, at any point, saw coming, despite the fact that looking back the clues are there. Their tableaux's are impressively gothic, or impressively worked out and I liked the fact this case, much more than any of the others seemed like a race between Dexter and Miami Metro to catch the bad guys. Is anyone ever going to consider the fact that Miami Metro never solve a case, or arrest anyone, they simply arrive at the end to pick up the body and declare the case closed.
One of the most strikingly ridiculous aspects of the show is how often Dexter abandons Harrison to his new nanny, Jamie, played by Aimee Garcia and goes out until late at night and how ridiculously accommodating about it she is. Like season four, the run ends with what surely will be another reveal that will change the foundation of the show going forward.
This was definitely better than the last season, in no small part due to the uncomfortableness about the idea of a Deb and Dexter relationship seemingly (hopefully) being averted by the final moments. Still enjoying the series as a whole, onwards to the penultimate season (for now).
