Well written sci-fi mystery

Warning: Spoilers
I watched this movie in spite of the bad reviews. And I was glad I did. Does it start out slow? Sure. But movies and television shows are a strange mix of ingredients where too little of one thing or too much of another can throw the movie/program off balance and make it unpalatable. This movie's characters were interesting enough to keep me watching until it built up enough steam to pull me along to a very surprising and satisfying ending.

Usually I despise a movie that needs the first half of the movie to define the characters. It's just bad writing that can't define the characters through the action of the movie. And I don't mean action in the sense of shoot-outs and car chases. I mean action in the sense of what propels the movie's premise to its logical or intended conclusion.

This is not what happens in this movie. The characters are revealed to us as the action unfolds. The mystery builds in Block Island Sound until its very unpredictable and unexpected conclusion. I'm pretty jaded so there are very few television or movie stories whose ending I can't predict. Not bragging, just old. But this movie took me by surprise.

Also surprising was the acting. It was quite good. "Anybody I've heard of?" Probably not, but I hope they stick with it because they were uncharacteristically good for a low budget sci-fi movie. Low budget? Sure. Low quality? Not at all. They didn't tackle anything they couldn't deliver.
