Stunning cinematography. Deep, character driven film based on a true story.

Romulus, My Father is based on the memoir of Australian philosopher and award-winning writer, Raimond Gaita. The stunning cinematography features the sparse, open beauty of Victoria, Australia in an earthy palate based in browns, tans, and olive.

Eric Bana stars in the intriguing role of Romulus' father, a Romanian, in love with and married to a German woman played by Franka Potente. Christine, Romulus' wife, is emotional unwell. She flits in and out of their home, and moves away to Melbourne with a friend of Romulus' brother with whom she has a baby. She suffers from postpartum depression, which is painfully depicted onscreen.

Kodi Smit-McPhee gives a brilliant performance of young Raimond who has a deep bond with both parents; grounded by his father, and anguished by his mother's absence.

If you're looking for an unlifting film, this is not it. If you love true cinema in the tradition of a beautifully acted, moody, character driven, non-American film with layers of depth, I'd say check this movie out. I saw this on Kanopy.
