Conscience: "It's me -- you -- both of us!"

I'm a practical person, the last to think about a former life.

But this diverting Roger Corman production got me pondering that. I was born in 1956. Had I entered the world a mere generation earlier, I'd have been a target of the Holocaust. Pretty chilling to consider...

This movie is shlocky, for sure, but it does get one wondering and features some wonderful dialogue.

"What brings you to the depths of the forest?" -- "Sorrow."

"You couldn't fool a child in its cradle."

"Be off, ghoul, and leave me alone!"

I also liked the casting here. How cool that true-blue lover Pendragon is portrayed by an earlier incarnation of David Strathairn. And how 'bout that sexy actress playing Livia, Allison Hayes? With her looks and body, I'd have thought she'd skyrocket in Hollywood. Her Wikipedia profile tells a much sadder tale.

The witches' Sabbath scene is certainly intriguing -- great dance! -- and the bare-chested executioner's leering crowd is appalling to behold. No surprise, really -- not then, or in today's world.
