'Unleashed (2005)' is actually quite bizarre, an adrenaline-fuelled action flick meets an uplifting family drama. Its fight sequences are far more accomplished than they ought to be, with frenetic choreography that shows off Jet Li's undeniable physical prowess, yet its calmer moments are also surprisingly effective, giving Li a chance to show his softer side. It's weird, but it works; the combination actually makes the movie better than it perhaps first appears to be. Though it's maybe a little silly, the flick is generally enjoyable. It's exciting when it needs to be, featuring some absolutely fantastic fight sequences, and it even comes close to being emotionally affecting, with a stronger focus on character than is perhaps usual with this sort of fare. Plus, Bob Hoskins delivers a strong, scene-chewing performance as the profanity-spewing antagonist. Overall, it's a solid action flick. 7/10.
