A Gory Mess
29 June 2021
I went into this movie having absolutely no expectations and yet I still came out disappointed. Despite the efforts of a star-studded cast, including the international star Peter Stormare, this was an utter waste of a movie. The only engaging character was Chae Yi-Do, all others were so stiffly written they could have been played by extras instead of so many well known actors of Korea. The plot was a total mess, carried by one gory scene to the next with very little connecting them other than a "super evil" serial killer. Lee Jong-Suk is convincingly evil, but because he was given very little to work with he just feels like a caricature of what a serial killer should be.

This movie might have worked with a script overhaul, perhaps with Detective Chae suspecting Kim Gwang-Il, chasing him for a bit with Jong-Suk playing the good boy, and then finally dropping the pretense at the end? I feel that would have been more engaging at least!

Overall I wish I hadn't wasted my time, as a huge fan of Lee Jong-Suk I was both disturbed and let down. The overall rating for this movie is much too generous.
