...some interesting new angles to the very worn serial killer trope.

Yes, played well, but the Japanese serial killer was largely the same serial killer you've seen before: This is art to them; in it for the rush, the high. Etc.

His attraction to the woman and her younger brother was intriguing but clumsily set-up.

His killing of the pimp too sloppy in a bathroom of a busy nightclub. Someone would have saw it all. I guess his self-destructiveness was implied by that point, but even still.

The hooker coming out of the trunk in the background was played for laughs, which was tasteless and not believable.

The Jakarta angle was interesting as it explored what someone would do given the right---or unfortunate---circumstance. Acted well, too.

His issues with the bad guy mob boss were vague and I'm still not sure what happened.

Both his killing of the lawyer and the battle out of the hotel were fumbled. I'm guessing they were trying to re-create the iconic fight in Oldboy, but just seemed sloppy and hastily shot.

The ending felt like it hit a powerful note, though, and was very effective.

Much longer than it needed to be indulging in self-serving directors and writers. Wasn't really shot well to convey some very good writing.
