The Prisoner Of Zenda (1937) : Brief Review -

A superb Adventure Drama with the different kind of Twins Idea. The Most Glamorous and Neat version of Anthony Hope's Timeless Novel. Hope's 1894 Novel of the same name is quite popular and has been adopted by many filmmakers in Hollywood as well as outside Hollywood. I happened to have seen Bollywood version of it directed by Sooraj Bharatiya 'Prem Ratan Dhan Payo' (2015) which came out as a Crap piece of filmmaking with utterly rubbish presentation and outdated theories. This 1937 version came in my watchlist because I want to see all the popular swashbuckling Adventure Drama and Adventure Dramas with other elements. I am done with 'The Black Pirate' 'Captain Blood' and 'The Adventures Of Robinhood' which are termed as Iconic films in this genre. When i read that The Prisoner Of Zenda is something similar to this genre and that Twins formula is also there, i just couldn't resist watching it. Now, I feel very happy that i have seen it because i have enjoyed it a lot. An Englishman on a Ruritarian holiday must impersonate the king when the rightful monarch, a distant cousin, is drugged and kidnapped. The comedy is less and that's the only bad thing about the film but rest, it's a blockbuster show. It has everything done right whether it is humour, drama, romance, action, situations, cultural touch and last but not the least, that bittersweet heart-burn in the climax. That forced me to add a extra half star in the final rating. I'm not sure about other versions cause i haven't seen them all, there are too many you know but i feel that it's safe to say that, this is the most glamorous and neat, if not the best (or could be). Ronald Coleman is awesome in dual roles and his charm is what makes the character more lovable than what was it in the novel. Cromwell and Van Dyke makes a solid entertainer, actually timeless which will never get old.
