Midnight Sun is a riveting police drama set in the Swedish mining town of Kiruna located in the Arctic Circle. This is a joint Swedish-French production featuring a specialist French Federal policewomen Kihana Zadi (Leila Bekhti) sent to Sweden to investigate the bizarre death of a French citizen. She teams up with local Prosecutor (like a US DA) Anders Harnesk (Gustaf Hammersten) and police in trying to solve what becomes an unfolding rash of bizarre murders that seem to implicate local minority Sami (the native inhabitants of Lappland) who are persecuted and discriminated against by the Swedes. Harnesk is half Sami so he brings a unique perspective to the investigation.

The series is bolstered by a number of fascinating sub plots: e.g. Zadi's late teen brother Nadji (Jeremy Corallo) shows up advising her that he's really her son unearthing her shameful teen pregnancy covered up in her Algerian community - he follows her to Sweden and gets caught up in the drama. A French former spy Olivier Gourmet (Alain Gruard) shadows Zadi to cover what the deceased Frenchman really did (dispose of illegal uranium). The Sami connection takes numerous dramatic turns as the true murderer is revealed.

The backdrop is the hauntingly beautiful arctic scenery set during summer so 24 hours of daylight. The series captures Swedish culture perfectly, it gives great insight into the plight of the Sami and it also details the aggressive 'take no prisoners' approach of French law enforcement as Zadi bridles at Swedish caution, reserve and rigid procedure.

The plot unfolds brilliantly, the action is gripping, the acting superb and, because of the international law-enforcement collaboration, much of the conversation is in English because of language necessity. It's a bingeworthy cop drama like no other.
