Portrait of a cad
14 October 2021
One of the best and most typical roles made as for a glove for the great George Sanders, the kind of character that will stick to him for the rest of his career. See for instance ALL ABOUT EVE, DEATH OF A SCOUNDREL, PRIVATE AFFAIRS OF BEL AMI, the eternal cynical dandy, ruthless cad, mysoginist at the most but with great lucidity and voyance. It may be painful and disturbing to watch because of the naughtiness of this man, a man for whom the audience can feel no empathy at all, on the contrary. A character that may feel you dizzy; But this is a damn good film, directed by the awesome Al Lewin. I don't see any actor who could have replaced him, or maybe Chris Plummer.
