Show People (1928)
7/10
Predictable but extremely funny
5 January 2022
So far, my idea of how studios worked in the silent film era had been shaped by 'Singing in the Rain' (1952). Here, you get a direct insight into how spontanous the production process was, and also into how the division of labour between 'troups' of actors and directors focused on comedy and others specialising in 'high' drama worked. I found this historically really interesting. The acting is excellent (especially Marion Davis), the plot frequently hilarious, though all in all pretty predictable. While I did not enjoy the background music and sound - including laughter (!) - that my copy has, this is still a brilliant picture that is well worth watching.
