The Walking Dead: First Time Again (2015)
Season 6, Episode 1

Eventful first episode to the sixth series

Rick has a plan to empty a quarry full of zombies.

This is a visually striking and well balanced between character development and action.

This episode jumps between time periods and uses black and white cinematography to help us keep track. It serves this purpose well and looks very cinematic at the same time.

The character moments are mostly strong, especially the scenes involving Morgan and Rick. There are also some memorable moments involving Glenn and Nicholas, Abraham and Sasha, and my favourite (easily) is Rick's response to Gabriel's offer to help.

I do like how The Walking Dead likes to show the reaction of characters to the behaviour of others with simple looks and body language. One scene does this so well it communicates what the characters might be thinking about the situation at the time.

I did feel the length of the episode. I'm sure the writers would argue the need for every scene for the sake of character development, but some parts could have been more ruthlessly cut. Was the attempted one-man insurrection against the Rick really necessary?

The production values are excellent as it presents what appears to be a huge undertaking. I'm not sure how many zombie extras were involved or the amount of CGI used, but what's being depicted feels plausible.

All performances are great as ever, particularly Andrew Lincoln and Lennie James.

It's a 7.5/10 for me but I round upwards.
