The Death of Superman (2018 Video)

Mediocre writing but...
24 February 2022
As much as Superman:Doomsday suffered from a condensed story I still prefer many aspects of it to this version when it comes to writing, basically contains all the issues I have had with all the DCAU new 52 movies, yet does the actually Doomsday fight a lot of justice.

Almost every character is the same person (kind of like the Joss Whedon critiques, that most lines can be said by anyone in his stories and fit but missing his charm). Either no one seems deeper than a pubble in personality or they are so constrained to certain characteristics that they lose all humanity (Batman is a loner and brooding, I get it, but crack a joke once in awhile, yeesh).

There's a scene in the watchtower that besides for Bats and Super (who aren't great but at least have come off somewhat specific to everyone else) all the spoken dialogue literally could have been uttered by anyone there and it would make sense. They're all generic snarky superhumans.

In general these new 52 films feel so bland to me. I just don't care what is happening to any superhero. It says a lot where I found Lois and Clark's interactions more interesting than any of the superhero interactions bc that at least forces the characters to act somewhat uniquely. And I honestly enjoyed that aspect of the story even if I was bored with everything else.

But... When Doomsday finally starts fighting the JL, it does gets really good. Like the production team was allowed to actually be creative as opposed to the mandated crappy facsimile of the MCU style of homogenized movies.

Doomsday is terrifying, he is an unstoppable force that anyone but Superman is unable to even face from more than a few minutes without getting pulverized. The animators do a fantastic job showing his brutality and the direction and fight choreography portray it as well and everything else comes together to make the fights so intense.

This is what would arguably what make this film great if it wasn't so mediocre and boring for half the runtime. Takes close to an hour to get here and the build up is meh but once it hits it's a doozy.
