Review of Solsidan

Solsidan (2010– )

Swedish soft cringe

A series that follows the lives of two different families in an upper middle class area near Stockholm. The humour often comes from classic awkward situations that escalate over the course of an episode, but with the added bonus of making fun of the hypocrisy and ridiculousness of the well-to-do.

While every character is an exaggeration of some sort, the emotional drama in the middle of the comedy feels real and ties the show together. Despite the hateful qualities of each character the writers manage to squeeze some genuine empathy out of the viewers.

Having been on for over ten years now, the latest series feel like a decline from the earlier form. The end may be nigh, and that's a good thing. I hope they won't ruin this by trying to force it go on forever.
