A weak finale to the series
18 May 2022
The use of flashbacks from previous films in the Antoine Doinel series could have been a strength, serving as connective tissue and helping to link the feeling of sifting through memories of the past and trying to come to terms with them. Instead, it's so overdone that it becomes a weakness. This film looked in the rear-view mirror so much that it forgot to tell a compelling story of its own, and ended up a muddled mess. After the divorce at the beginning, Doinel bounces between his current lover and an old flame who he spots on a train and impetuously pursues, but nothing terribly interesting comes of it (or of the odd encounter with his mother's lover). There is not a sense of defining vision that's present in the script, and it all seems rather thrown together, hoping something will stick. Definitely one for fans of the series only; for me, the highlight was Dorothée.
