Due to a lack of original ideas, HIMYM has done a fair share of tired tropes and now the time has come for the "boyfriend meets girlfriend's scary father". As expected, it fails miserably.
One of the reasons is that, like several times before, the series throws something out of the blue but acts as if that thing was well and truly established long before. This time, they are trying to sell us the idea that it is well known how Robin's father is a scary dude, and that everybody is well aware of that. The problem is, that is not the case at all. So far, it has been established that Robin's father is insensitive, doesn't care about her and wishes he had a son. None of those things mean that he is tough nor scary, but everybody acts as if that was the case and they expect the viewers to go along.
However, the main reason that this whole premise fails is that the father is not portrayed as scary at all. He looks autistic and not very bright, but not scary. The actor playing the role did a really lousy job.
